Community Garden clear up days

We need your help clearing the Britannia Village community garden!

The garden has become really overgrown and under used. West Silvertown Foundation wants to enable to the community to bring it back to life.

Over June the garden will be open several days a week for members of the community to come and clear it, ready for professional gardeners to restore it fully in July. This space can then be used for activities throughout the summer, to help our community recover from lockdown.

The garden will be open 11-3 Mondays and Thursdays, and 9:30-12:30 Tuesdays and Fridays, from Monday 8th June.

What can I expect?

  • We'll provide gardening tools and PPE (available in BV hall)
  • You may have the garden to yourself, or there may be up to 5 others there
  • The first job is to pull up weeds, then bring them to our bins and skip at BV hall. Once this is done, we'll be able to see what other jobs need doing
  • Don't worry if you're not a natural gardener - people of all ages and abilities can help with clearing.
  • We'll be on hand if you're not sure what to do.

Keep fit, get outside, help your community - what's not to love?!

Neighbourhood Shopping 

 

Do you need shopping whilst self-isolating?

Many in our community are in vulnerable households, shielding or in self-isolation. Online delivery slots are hard to find, and without the support of friends, family or neighbours, they are unable to get their shopping and basic essentials.

As a long-standing and reputable local charity, WSF will connect volunteers with those in the community who need help getting their essential shopping done.

How does it work?

  1. Once you have registered (click here) we will email you to complete your shopping list

  2. One of our Project Coordinators will match you with a local Neighbourhood Shopper who will shop and drop. We will confirm with you what day to expect your shopping (usually on a Monday if you register Thursday-Friday, and on a Thursday if you register Saturday-Wednesday)

  3. Our volunteer will send WSF a copy of the receipt (the original will be left with your shopping for you)

  4. On receipt of your shopping, you send the payment to WSF, using your Shopping as reference

  5. WSF will reimburse our Neighbourhood Shopper

 

Is it safe?

WSF will recruit and screen all Neighbourhood Shopper volunteers. WSF will support them to safely undertake their volunteering role.

WSF will keep a record of all Neighbourhood Shopper volunteers and all those who request support, using our secure database Upshot

No money or contact details is exchanged between our Volunteers and Clients to keep safeguarding risks to a minimum. Our Project Coordinator will be the liaison for both. The client will pay the shopping cost to WSF. The  Neighbourhood Shopper will use their own funds to pay for the shopping and then complete an expense form for reimbursement, which WSF will honour regardless of when the client pays in.

WSF will follow up any concerns or issues raised, and will ensure that any additional support required is referred to an appropriate provider.

If you would like to round up the figure to add a small donation to keep our charity work going that would be greatly appreciated!

Please do not attempt to exchange any money with your shopping volunteer as this goes against the COVID-19 government guidelines and your safety is paramount.

I need a free parcel with food and essentials, can you help me?

We are working in partnership with our friends at BDCA to deliver emergency parcels to people in the Royal Docks.

If you are a Newham resident whose income has been directly affected by the coronavirus and cannot afford to pay for your shopping, you can request an Emergency Relief Parcel here. This is usually a change or termination in employment, a delay in receiving benefits, or a reduction in income due to self-employment. Please expect a phone call from us to confirm your circumstances.

We can only give up to a maximum of 3 emergency parcels per household, and if you still need help, you will need to call so we can help find a better long term solution.
